Visiting Fellow
Andrés Argüello is a Visiting Fellow at the Georgetown Center on Poverty and Inequality, leveraging his experience in federal policymaking and policy research to build the case for whole-family approaches to public benefits and increase access to care. He is leading a project focused on strengthening digital benefits infrastructure and modernizing public assistance.
For over ten years, Andrés has worked at the intersection of health policy and economic justice, crafting solutions to improve access, affordability, and quality of care. Most recently, he served as a political appointee for the Biden-Harris Administration in the Department of Health and Human Services as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Health Policy, where he led policy development and legislative affairs on issues including health equity, climate change, and behavioral health. Andrés also served as Senior Advisor to Secretary Xavier Becerra, focusing on child and family policy. Notable achievements include collaborating on efforts to preserve Medicaid, expand access to affordable early care and education, strengthen cash and utility assistance programs, and enhance child welfare.
His experience includes driving health and economic policy at the Congressional Joint Economic Committee, shaping health policy for Pete Buttigieg’s presidential campaign, and conducting policy research at Mathematica and the White House’ Council of Economic Advisors.
Andrés holds an MA in Economics from Johns Hopkins University, an MBA from Insead, an MS in Latin American Studies from the University of Oxford, and a BA in History and Literature from Harvard College.
